Greetings!

Hello again. This month promises to be another busy one. We travel to the Northeast for two book signings for Steve's new book, Earth Forms. At month's end the Arizona Biennial will close with an auction of many of the works seen there.

Book Signings for Earth Forms
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Earth Forms Book Cover On September 12, Steve will be at the Clark Gallery in Lincoln, MA, for a book signing.
On September 14 he will speak at Middlebury College in Vermont and later sign books at the Vermont Photography Workplace.
For those people unable to attend a book signing, we would like to remind you that you may obtain a signed copy of Earth Forms directly from us. Please visit the book website to see examples of its content. If you would like to purchase a copy, just reply to this email and we will be happy to make arrangements with you to obtain a copy. We also offer a combination of a signed book with a signed print (8" x 8") of one of the images in the book, for $90. Of course, the book is also available from Amazon.com.
Upcoming Shows
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Adobe, Terlingua, TX At the end of August we traveled to San Diego for the opening of The Art of Photography show in the Lyceum Theater Gallery in the old gaslight district. Karen's image, Terlingua Adobe, is among only 111 pieces selected by juror, Charlotte Cotton, from 16,000 entries submitted by artists in 57 countries! The show will run from August 29 - November 1, 2009.

The Arizona Biennial '09 will continue to be on exhibit at the Tucson Museum of Art through September 25. On September 26 the show will close with an auction of many of the pieces in the show, including Karen's motel image, as a benefit for the Museum.

Both Steve and Karen have images in the Tubac Center for the Arts Member's Open that opens on September 11. Steve's image is one of Titus Canyon in Death Valley and is included in Earth Forms. Karen's image is "Antonella's Office", from her new Illusions of Reality series. Karen has another image from that series, "Bunkhouse, Diamond Ranch, OR", in the Dreams and Fantasies show at the Vermont Photography Workplace, also opening on September 11. Unfortunately we will not be able to attend either opening, but the Vermont show will be up when we visit for Steve's book signing.

Steve also has his image of the Haleakala Crater floor on Maui in a juried show at the Center for Photographic Art in Carmel, CA. The show will open on September 19 and run through December 5.

Another new book, Observatories of the Southwest
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Observatories of the Southwest Cover
While not officially published until October, we have seen the first copies of Observatories of the Southwest: A Guide for Curious Skywatchers written in collaboration with Douglas Isbell, who was in charge of public outreach at the National Optical Astronomy Observatories until recently. The book should be at the University of Arizona Press as you read this and soon available at local bookstores and through Amazon.com.
The book is a practical guide to the major observatories of the region for those eager to learn what modern telescopes are doing, to understand the role each of these sites has played in advancing our understanding of the cosmos, and to visit and see the tools of the astronomer. For each observatory, the authors describe its history, highlights of its contributions to astronomy-with an emphasis on recent results-and information for visitors. Also included are wide-ranging interviews with astronomers closely associated with each site.
Observatories covered range from McDonald in Texas to Palomar in California, including: Arizona's Kitt Peak National Observatory southwest of Tucson, the Lowell Observatory in Flagstaff, and the Whipple Observatory outside Amado; and New Mexico's Very Large Array near Socorro and Sacramento Peak close to Sunspot. In addition to describing these established institutions, they also take a look ahead to the most powerful ground-based telescope in the world just beginning full operation on Mount Graham in Safford, Arizona.
